Let’s face it; we all look forward to a juicy on-screen lesbian scene. I’ve been craving them since I was a mere, closeted teenager, at a time when lesbians were fiercely underrepresented.
I remember watching Cruel Intentions too many times to mention just for THAT lesbian kiss. Other than an iconic music video by t.A.T.u, there was little else to ignite my gay awakening.
In fact, I would happily watch the worst trashiest uncreative productions if it meant getting the slightest bit of lesbian action. And I know I’m not alone on that one.
Fast forward twenty years, and thankfully, we have seen heaps of progression in this area. While, of course, there’s still a long way to go, LGBTQ+ representation on our screens is at an all-time high.
Of course, we must continue to advocate for better lesbian representation both in cinema and TV; however, for now, let’s take a look at some of the iconic lesbian scenes that have helped shape lesbian culture today.

One of the most intimate and intense lesbian movie scenes takes place in the 2002 movie Frida.
Based on the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, the film charts Frida’s passion for her work, her controversial lifestyle, and naturally, her complicated relationships.
We learn in the movie that Frida, played by the beautiful Salma Hayek, is $exually fluid. Many of her affairs involve other women.
In this particular scene, we witness Frida win a dance with Tina in a drinking competition. The dancing itself is mesmerising. But the chemistry between the two women is what makes this lesbian love scene so captivating.
2. The Half of It
Easily one of the best lesbian movies on Netflix right now, The Half of It follows Ellie, the high school nerd who’s popular for all the wrong reasons.
When Paul hires Ellie to write love letters to his crush Ester, Ellie ends up falling for her herself. Born into a traditional Chinese family, this is a tough realisation for Ellie.
Ester, on the other hand, is carrying a heavy burden due to her religion. This becomes apparent in the intimate scene between Ellie and Ester in the hot springs.
Never have I wanted a kiss to happen as much as I did during this scene. The conversation, the setting, and the music all suggest it’s going to happen, but it never does.
Nonetheless, the emotion and chemistry between the actors is magical, which is why it’s one of my favourite lesbian love scenes of all time.
3. Tell it to the Bees
Based on the book of the same name, Tell it to the Bees portrays a beautiful lesbian love story between two women from a small town in Scotland. (Click here to Read the Book)
Set in the 1950s when being queer was taboo, the movie was a good representation of what it might have been like to be ‘different’ in those days.
To be honest, I wasn’t big on the ending of this film. But I would still say that the movie is worth a watch. One of my favourite scenes is when the boy, Charlie, encourages Jean and Lydia to dance.
While there is no $exual contact, it’s a pinnacle moment in the film as they both seem to acknowledge their mutual attraction.
4. Battle of the Sexes
Emma Stone plays the protagonist in this biographical sports film, which follows renowned tennis player Billie Jean King.
King, whose most famous for her defeat against Bobby Riggs, was also one of the first athletes to be publicly outed. She has since gone on to say that it wasn’t easy at a time when “being gay was a big deal”.
The film follows King as she struggles with two monumental battles. The one which would lead to her defeat over Briggs. And the one that sees her trying to come to terms with her sexuality.
There are some beautiful and sensual scenes throughout the movie with her and Marilyn. But I love the car scene in particular when they agree to be “just friends”.
5. Carol
Set in the 1950s and derived from the lesbian novel The Price of Salt, the lesbian movie Carol is a timeless and flawless production. The story follows aspiring photographer Terese, who falls for Carol after meeting her in a department store.
The pair embark on a romantic love affair. But with Carol going through a tricky divorce, they are playing a dangerous game. Which, naturally, only makes their affair all the more exciting.
The scene in question; however, follows after Carol and Terese decide to take a festive road trip together. We observe the $exual tension build between them before they kiss and have $ex for the first time.

6. Freeheld
Freeheld is a beautiful and heartwarming story, but it’s also going to break your heart. You have been warned.
Julie-Anne Moore and Elliot Page star in the movie, which chronicles the true story of a New Jersey police detective.
After being diagnosed with terminal cancer Laurel wishes to leave her pension benefits to her domestic partner, Stacie. What follows, is a heart-wrenching battle for equal rights.
In this scene, we witness one of Laurel and Stacies happier times as they frolic on the beach. Seeing the couple carefree and in love is as touching as it is devastating when you know what’s to come.
Many critics have criticised the lead actresses portrayal of the story, but I thought it was a tremendous effort on both parts.
7. Desert Hearts
One of the older titles on this list, Desert Hearts is a groundbreaking movie for its time.
The storyline charts a New York professor as she leaves her home divorces her husband and starts an affair with another woman.
Made in the 80s but set in the 50s, the movie features numerous iconic lesbian scenes. However, the one that sticks in my mind is the first kiss, when Cay kisses Vivien in the rain.
There’s just something so romantic and $exy about kissing in the rain, albeit cliche AF.
8. But, I’m a Cheerleader
In this cult classic lesbian movie, Megan is sent to a conversion therapy camp after her parents suspect she might be a lesbian.
Megan, having never questioned sexuality is naturally surprised. But when she meets out and proud lesbian Graham, she starts to question whether her parents were right after all.
The scene where Megan and Graham have $ex for the first time is beautifully portrayed. The camera focuses on the girl’s faces rather than their nudity, capturing the raw emotion and intensity of the moment.
By far, one of the most iconic lesbian movie scenes of all time.
9. Go Fish
One of the most influential lesbian films of the past 30 years, Go Fish follows Max, who leaves behind her girlfriend to attend a college in Chicago.
She later meets Ely, an unconventional older woman, and there is an obvious attraction between them from the get-go.
The scene when Max and Ely kiss for the first time is incredibly cute. Well, that is until they are awkwardly interrupted by a phone call from Max’s girlfriend.
I loved how this movie challenged lesbian stereotypes. And how rather than orchestrating it to be easy on the eye, it was an accurate representation of your average lesbian and their relationships.

10. Imagine Me & You
Imagine Me & You was one of the first lesbian movies I ever watched. I remember feeling awakened by the movie, like, this is what I want from my life. But it took several more years until I had the courage to embrace that truth.
Anyhow, the storyline centres on Rachel and Luce, who fall for each other after meeting at Rachel’s wedding. Yep, that’s right. Rachel is newly married. To a man. So, as you can imagine, it gets kind of messy from there.
*Spoiler Alert* – If you don’t want to know how the story ends, move on to the next film now.
It’s a captivating storyline, and there are some unforgettable romantic scenes. However, none can compete with the final five minutes.
When Rachel chases after Luce to tell her ‘I can do this’, well, be still my heart. The moment when they run into each other arms gives me all the feels. And it was a delight to see the girl win the girl after all.
11. Cloudburst
Cloudburst is likely to be one of the lesser-known titles on this list, but deserving of a spot nonetheless.
In this comedy-romance, a lesbian couple of 31 years escape from a nursing home, after old age and a selfish granddaughter threaten to tear them apart.
Their goal is to reach Canada, where they can get married. Along the way, they pick up a male hitchhiker, and the three embark on a wild adventure.
The protagonists, Stella & Dot, are #lesbiancouplegoals. They joke about lesbian p*rn, carry vibr*tors, and the love they have for each other couldn’t be more obvious.
There’s a lovely scene where they share a kiss in the rain which is sure to warm even the coldest of hearts.
12. I Can’t Think Straight
Another firm favourite of mine thanks to its typical British humour, I Can’t Think Straight centres on a blossoming relationship between two women from very different backgrounds.
Tala is an upper-class woman from Jordan due to be married, while Leyla is a British Indian woman from a traditional family.
The pair form an unlikely connection, and in this memorable scene during a weekend getaway, they end up having $ex. Unlike the novel of the same name, the $ex scenes are not explicit. But they are sensual, passionate and erotic.

Tamsin, played by a young Emily Blunt, is from an upper-class family; however, upon meeting working-class Mona, there is an immediate attraction between them.
Emily Blunt is super-$exy in the movie, and the kissing scene in the waterfall is hot (it’s that water again!) Well, it is until it’s not, and you’ll only know what I mean if you’ve seen the film.
Unfortunately, the cute and $exy love story takes a twisted turn. But, will it be a happy ending, that’s the question?
The Steamiest Lesbian Movie Scenes
14. Summertime
In this French lesbian movie, Carole and Delphine meet and fall in love in Paris, during the early 1970s.
When Delphine has to return to her family in the countryside, Carole, a feminist activist, follows her. Only their relationship causes quite the stir, and they learn that neither feminism nor lesbianism is accepted in Delphine’s home town.
Again, it’s hard to choose one particular lesbian $ex scene from this movie. However, when Carole and Delphine take a day trip and end up having $ex on the grass is a standout moment for me.
There’s definitely something about getting naked and wild in nature, that seems, well, so natural!
15. K*ll For Me
In this American thriller, two roommates Amanda and Hailey, concoct a sinister plan to get rid of their abusive boyfriends.
As the movie develops, Amanda finds herself in a sticky situation with Hailey, who turns out to be quite the psychopath.
While I far from loved this movie, there’s no denying it features one of the hottest lesbian movie scenes of all time.
After Hailey protects Amanda from her bully ex, the two end up having steamy $ex in the bathroom. And hot damn! They make stand up $ex look so easy.
16. Disobedience
The title itself is seductive enough. But In this 2017 lesbian movie, we see acclaimed actresses Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams play former lovers reunited after years apart.
Both women were born into Jewish families. Only while Ronit escaped the customs expected of her, Esti is still a part of the community. Not only that, she is married.
There is one notable and lengthy $ex scene in the movie. Observing Esti and Ronit as they explore each other’s bodies, is incredibly erotic. And then, of course, there’s the ‘spitting’ that got everybody talking.
But while the scene is incredibly sensual, passionate, and will undoubtedly get you hot under the collar, it’s also meaningful and symbolic. There’s a representation of freedom and recognition of the true self.
17. Blue is the Warmest Colour
Blue is the Warmest Colour is probably the most famous and controversial lesbian movie ever made. Many criticised the film and that unforgettable 10-minute $ex scene, and of course, I understand why.
However, if I forget everything I know now about the movie, and look back to how it made me feel when I first watched it, Natalie and I found it to be incredibly hot and relatable.
In fact, I don’t think we made it to the end of the film in one sitting *blush.
18. Below Her Mouth
Below Her Mouth is by far one of the raunchiest lesbian movies ever made. And I’m talking about a LOT of graphic $ex that goes on in this movie.
The various steamy scenes which take place in a variety of locations are incredibly hot and realistic. Which probably has something to do with the fact it was women who directed the film.
On the other hand, it’s just a shame that the storyline and script don’t do the movie justice.
19. Elisa & Marcela
Based on the true story of Spain’s first same-sex marriage, Elisa and Marcela is a lesbian romance movie of forbidden love and overcoming all odds.
It follows the budding friendship of Elisa and Marcela, which over time, develops into a forbidden love that they have to keep secret.
The $ex scenes are pretty great, albeit slightly strange at times. One in particular bizarrely involves an Octopus, and another a lot of milk. Who knew that milk could be so $exy!
20. The Handmaiden
This classic South-Korean thriller is a loose adaptation of the famous lesbian novel, Fingersmith. Buy the Book here.
A young pickpocketer assumes the role of handmaiden for a wealthy family. It’s all part of a plan to deceive the young heiress into marrying a con man.
Naturally, the handmaiden develops feelings for the heiress, and a passionate relationship develops. Only the lesbian $ex scenes in the movie are far more erotic than those in the book.
Some might even go as far as to say p*rnogr*phic; however, the beauty and rawness of the cinematography save it from being seedy.
You can expect several lengthy and graphic scenes between the two women, including one scene involving the 69 and scissoring positions.
21. Loving Annabelle
Whilst not the most creative of storylines, Loving Annabelle, is incredibly gripping. And will resonate with anybody who ever had a crush on their high school teacher. (Uh-hum, Hi, Miss Jackson!)
Annabelle is a troubled teen who after being kicked out of two other schools, lands up in a catholic boarding school. It’s here that she meets sheltered teacher Simone, and the film charts their relationship as the $exual tension between them grows.
The scene where Annabelle and Simone finally have $ex is well worth the wait. That fantasy of student and teacher makes it incredibly hot to watch. And it’s certainly one of the most memorable lesbian $ex scenes of all time.
22. Black Swan
If you’ve not seen Black Swan, I’m not sure where you’ve been hiding for the past decade. But it features what is probably one of the most iconic lesbian scenes of the 21st Century.
The storyline centres around Nina. A ballerina who gets a chance to play the role of the white swan in Swan Lake.
When the director questions Ninas’ ability to fulfil the role, she finds herself slowly losing her mind. To this end, the movie takes on a dark and twisted turn.
In one scene, Nina (Natalie Portman) and her dance rival Lily (Mila Kunis) get incredibly intimate. It is $exy as hell because, well, who wouldn’t want Mila Kunis between their legs.
23. Heavenly Creatures
In this 90s cult classic, a young character played by Kate Winslet moves to New Zealand with her family. After meeting Pauline, the two form a bond, which soon develops an unhealthy and obsessive relationship.
When the parents attempt to intervene, the girl’s concoct a sinister plan that they believe will allow them to stay together. Made all the more disturbing by the fact that it’s a true story.
Out of all the lesbian movies on this list, Heavenly Creatures has one of the best storylines. However, there is also a notable steamy scene between the pair, which deserves praise for its tactfulness, creativity, and sensuality.
24. Gia
An article on the best lesbian movie scenes would not be complete without a mention of Gia.
In this biographical movie, Angelina Jolie takes on the role of troubled supermodel, Gia Marie Carangi. Her. Her life spirals out of control when she gets involved in a hedonistic world of drugs and parties.
I won’t give too much away. However, I can tell you that every queer girl’s fantasy comes true in the movie, with Jolie involved in a number of graphic lesbian $ex scenes.
In one particular scene, what starts as an innocent photo shoot, escalates to a steamy encounter in the bedroom.
25. Princess Cyd
I adored this coming-of-age movie that tells the story of a young girl named Cyd. When she moves to her Aunt’s place in Chicago, she meets a cute barista named Katie and finds herself attracted to her.
With her Aunts support, Syd starts to confront her fluid sexuality, and a beautiful relationship develops between the two young women.
After watching the $exual tension build between Syd and Katie, it’s a magical moment when the two finally get intimate.

26. Cruel Intentions
Come on, you all knew it was coming. I don’t know about you, but THAT kiss between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair was a part of my gay awakening.
It also helps that the movie is awesome, as is the soundtrack. I’m a big fan.
The storyline centres on Sebastian and his stepsister Kathryn. Two spoiled rich kids with despicable morals and a desire for ruining peoples lives.
When they make a bet for Sebastian to take the virginity of a girl at school, the story takes an unexpected turn of events.
27. My Days of Mercy
Elliot Page stars as Lucy in My Days of Mercy, a young woman whose father is on death row.
Lucy and her siblings travel around the country in a camper van, partaking in anti-death penalty demonstrations. Only at one protest, she locks eyes with Mercy who is an activist for the opposite side.
Despite their activism for opposite sides, there’s an obvious attraction and their feelings turn romantic.
In one metaphorical scene, the lyrics “you got me begging you for mercy” play on the radio, as Lucy & Mercy share a passionate kiss.
28. Jennifer’s Body
I couldn’t have a section on the best lesbian kissing scenes, without including Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfriend in Jennifer’s Body.
I mean Megan Fox is otherwordly isn’t she. And even though at this point she’s crazy and sacrificed herself to Satan, I would still trade places with Amanda in a heartbeat.
This kiss is one of those kisses, that will stick in your mind forever. And so will Megan Fox.
29. Elena Undone
The storyline of a lesbian falling for a straight married woman may be stereotypical and overdone, but there’s no denying it’s a reality that many queer women face.
In Elena Undone, Peyton and Elena are from entirely different backgrounds. One is a well-known lesbian writer while the other is a mother and the wife of a priest.
What begins as friendship quickly develops into something more profound. And despite Elena having never thought about kissing a woman, she has an overwhelming desire to do just that.
What follows is said to be the most extended uncut kissing scene in cinema history. The 3:24 kiss is what every first kiss should be like – passionate, emotional, and will take your breath away.
30. Kiss Me
In this acclaimed Swedish lesbian movie, we are met with another lesbian falls for straight girl storyline.
However, despite the stereotypical storyline, it’s a really good and uplifting movie. And the chemistry between the two protagonists is convincing enough to stick around for.
When Mia and Frida kiss for the first time at the family summerhouse, it’s an intense moment.
They are later involved in a passionate $ex scene; however, it’s the lustful first kiss that stole the show for me.
Best Lesbian Scenes on TV
31. Orphan Black – Delphine Saves Cosima
I get a twinge in my heart when I reminisce about this show. Natalie and I finished the last series just recently, and I’ve been in mourning ever since.
I don’t want to give too much away, but if you’re yet to watch Orphan Black, it’s about a compelling conspiracy involving clones that unravels throughout the seasons. It’s gripping, exhilarating, and features lesbian characters. What more could you want!
Delphine and Cosima get off to a rocky start in the show, but by the end, they are the epitome of #lesbiancouplegoals. In this scene, the couple emotionally reunite after a traumatic and confusing time apart.
The catch is, Delphine must now try to save Cosima’s life. It’s an incredibly intense lesbian scene, beautiful, touching, and $exy all at the same time.
32. Orange Is the New Black – Alex & Piper Have Angry $ex
When it comes to gripping lesbian scenes, Orange is the New Black is teeming with them. I could be here all day listing my favourites, but I’ve narrowed it down to just one (OK, maybe two).
Anybody who’s seen the show won’t be surprised by my first choice, I’m sure. This $exy and somewhat amusing encounter sums up the volatile relationship between Alex & Piper perfectly.
We’ve all been there. There’s a fine line between love and hate, especially when it comes to someone who isn’t necessarily good for us. And that’s why this angry kinda $ex is so irresistible – it’s the forbidden fruit!
33. The L Word – Shane and Carmen First Make Out
Ah, one of the hottest, most unforgettable, and utterly tragic tv lesbian couples of all time. I won’t tell you how badly I wanted these two to work out because, well, the likelihood is, you feel my pain.
So, with that in mind, let’s talk about all the good times. Well, actually, just this one particular good time when they’d first met, and Shane hadn’t been such an a*sehole. Isn’t ignorance bliss?
Anyway, we all know and love this scene. Shane and Carmen lock eyes while on a job at a movie studio, and in true Shane fashion, she’s able to seduce Carmen in a matter of minutes.
Before long, they’re having hot and steamy $ex in the recording room. And by that point, it took me approximately 0.5 seconds to start lusting after Carmen, who’s, in my opinion, the $exiest character of the show.
34. Sense 8 – Nomi and Amanita Get Married
Sense 8 is one of the most incredible, gripping, yet sadly short-lived shows ever created. It’s also one of those gems that’s fiercely underrated, so if you’re yet to hear about it, now’s your chance to jump on the bandwagon.
It’s a sci-fi thriller and charts 8 supposed strangers who live in entirely separate cities around the globe. Somehow a mysterious force connects them, and they come to find that they share each other’s feelings, emotions, and physicalities.
Two of the lead characters are a lesbian couple, one of whom is trans and is played by trans actor Jamie Clayton. Watching Nomi and Amanita’s love story unfold is beautiful to watch, so when they get married at the end of the show, it’s a truly heartwarming moment.
35. Wynonna Earp – WayHaughts Most Sensual Kiss
Is WayHaught the best lesbian ship of all time? The jury is well and truly out on that one, but they’ve got to be up there, haven’t they?
In amongst all the demons and monsters and supernatural type stuff, the pair share a number of intimate scenes throughout the show. But their most $exy and sensual scene happens in series 1, episode 12.
Many would argue that it’s their first kiss that deserves this title. And yes, that one was brilliant and lustful, but it was highly anticipated. The one in the barn just felt more intimate, like you could feel the chemistry emanate off the screen.
36. The Haunting of Bly Manor – Dani & Jaime Kiss
Oh my, how am I supposed to write anything about this show without getting tears in my eyes? What an incredible lesbian love story this was, and I’m not even mad about the ending (OK, maybe I am a tad).
I won’t say too much just in case you’re yet to watch it, and if that’s so, I’m a little jealous. I’d love to wipe my memory of the show and watch it all over again like it’s the first time.
Again, take your pick when it comes to lesbian scenes between these two lovebirds. But you have to love their first kiss. Albeit ended pretty awkwardly, but the lead up was cute as hell. I laughed harder than is probably appropriate when Jaime remarked about Dani’s ex-dead boyfriend.
37. A-Typical – Casey & Izzie’s First Kiss
There is so much to love about this show. And despite being immensely sad that it’s over, I’m grateful that it ended in such a positive and uplifting way.
If you’re late to the party, A-Typical centres on autistic teenager Sam and how he navigates life with the support of his family. Like most families, they’re all slightly dysfunctional, but their hearts are in the right place, and they make for fascinating characters.
Once again, this show has it all. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll swoon over the lesbian ship of the show as well.
Casey is Sam’s sister, and in series two, she falls in love with her best friend, Izzie. Their first kiss is the sweetest ever, and they continue to be cute throughout the show.
38. Gypsy – Jean and Sidney Play Truth or Dare
Anybody who’s seen this show will agree that there wasn’t much right about this lesbian Netflix series. However, one thing they didn’t get wrong was the streamy lesbian scenes.
The chemistry between Jean and Sidney is profound and pretty much the only reason I stuck the show out until the end.
In this particular scene, the $exy couple’s attempt at getting to know one another evolves into truth or dare. What follows is a suspenseful string of events involving some dirty dancing, strip teasing, and, well, I think you can guess how it ends.
39. The L Word – Shane & Cherie Have $ex by the Pool
Yes, pretty controversial this one, I know, considering what I said earlier. And don’t get me wrong, I still think Shane is the worlds biggest prat for cheating on Carmen.
However, taking that part out of the equation, there’s no denying that this is one of the hottest lesbian scenes on tv.
When Cherie waltzes back into Shane’s life after separating from her husband, Shane just can’t resist the temptation.
She goes round to Cherie’s house, they get down and dirty in the pool, followed by passionate $ex on the pool deck.
40. Orange Is the New Black – Poussey and Soso Get to Know Each Other
OK, we all know that Orange Is the New Black is famous for its steamy and $exy lesbian scenes. And of course, we ALL love that about the show.
But can we take a minute to reflect on Poussey and Soso? I would argue that they are the cutest lesbian couple in the whole show. They had something so pure and beautiful – a genuine friendship that grew into a sweet lesbian love story.
As with all the best love stories, there are some misunderstandings and confused feelings at the start. However, after this adorable scene of Soso declaring her feelings for Poussey, their relationship really starts to blossom.
41. Sense 8 – Nomi’s Pride Speech
This last scene is more of a bonus addition, as it’s not exactly lesbian specific; however, this moving PRIDE speech by Nomi in series 1, episode 2, is relatable to anybody who grew up LGBTQ+. Especially those who have or had a hard time coming out to friends and family.
I’ve already harped on about how much I love the show. But I also want to mention that not only does Sense 8 stand out for its inclusivity, but there are countless jewels of wisdom and profound lessons to take away from it. I’ll never forgive Netflix for cancelling it after just two seasons.

When Night is Falling – A national film board of Canada film about a woman professor who falls in love with a woman in an alternative circus. Beautifully filmed.
