10 Things to Consider when Writing a Successful Online Dating Profile

When it comes to meeting that ‘special someone’, long gone are the days of catching someone’s eye in a bar or nightclub and wooing them with your cheesy pick-up lines. No, it’s the 21st century. And like most things in this world, dating has gone digital. So if you’re single in 2020, it pays to know how to write a successful online dating profile.

As some of you may know, Natalie and I met on a dating website. And despite the common misconception that romantic relationships formed online don’t last, we are living proof that they do. In fact, one in three couples now find love online. Which is pretty staggering when you think about it, isn’t it? Yes, a touch or a swipe can determine the realisation of meeting your soul mate.  No pressure or anything.

But while online dating might sound daunting, it’s actually a solid way of meeting somebody with common interests. But what makes a successful online dating profile? How do you make yourself sound appealing, without coming across as arrogant or desperate? Well, that’s the idea of this blog post. As well as helping you to make your dating profile stand out amongst the rest, I list some of the best free dating websites on the market.

So let’s get to it, here are 10 things to consider when writing a successful online dating profile.

10 Things to Consider when Writing a Successful Online Dating Profile

1. Be Honest

I can’t stress this enough, but being honest is by far the number one thing to consider when composing your dating profile. It could be a big lie or a small lie. But either way will land you in deep water in the end, so it’s best to be upfront from the start. It’s far better to attract the right person by being honest, rather than the wrong person by telling lies.

2. Be Creative

When describing yourself and your likes and dislikes, try to think outside of the box. Avoid list formats and instead, show the depths of your personality. Think of something interesting that will make them intrigued to get to know you more.

3. Give Details

At the same time, give specific details. For example, if you like music, who is your favourite singer or band? If you share common interests, it could be a great conversation starter.

4. Ask Friends to Help

Often, the perception we have ourselves is far different from how those close perceive us. Asking your close friends to help you describe the person you are will have a positive effect on your dating profile.

5. Don’t Take Yourself too Seriously

Be funny. Be cheeky. Don’t be afraid to disclose some of the quirks that make you, well, YOU. You will seem far more approachable if you seem like you have a good sense of humour. And finding somebody who you can have fun with is one of the most attractive qualities.

6. Avoid Specifying your Type

Blonde hair, blue eyes, and an athletic figure maybe your usual type; however, I’d avoid being too specific on your profile. A lot of the time, we end up with partners who are the complete opposite of our “type”. So keep an open mind and see who comes your way.

7. Be Positive

Treat your dating profile like you would a CV for a potential employer and avoid any negativity. Of course, none of us are perfect, but we don’t want to share our imperfections before we’ve even had our first date.

8. Show Confidence

Confidence is sexy. Arrogance is not. There may be a fine line between the two, but being confident in your own skin and knowing what you want is a sure-fire way of attracting a significant other.

9. Choose Photos Wisely

Do your photos showcase your true appearance? Do they reflect who you are as a person? Are they clear and of good quality? Keep this checklist in mind when selecting the photos for your profile.

10. Be Yourself

Finally, BE YOURSELF. The most beautiful thing you can be in this world is yourself, and the right people will love you for who you are.
