How to get to Secret Waterfall in Hampi

The secret waterfall in Hampi is located approximately 2km from the Hampi Bazaar area. You can search for the falls on google maps, but it appears to lead you into the water. So it’s better to ask for more specific instructions from a local.

While it is possible to take a rickshaw, scooter, or bicycle, they will only be able to bring you so far. Eventually, you will reach the banana plantations, and from here, you will need to hike.

Often, you will find locals hanging around the plantations. When you arrive, they will offer to guide you to the falls for a small fee. Although it is possible to reach the falls alone, we wouldn’t recommend it. It’s easy to get lost, and some areas are dangerous.

From the banana plantations, it’s around a half-hour walk to reach the falls. It isn’t a strenuous hike, but you should prepare for some sketchy areas where you’ll need to tread carefully.

Our Experience at Secret Waterfall in Hampi

After spending a tiresome day exploring the Hampi Ruins, we were eager to find a spot where we could relax and cool down. We asked at our guesthouse if there was a safe spot to swim in the river. And that’s when we learned of the secret waterfall in Hampi.

Naturally curious by this new information, we took our bicycles and followed the instructions our hotel manager gave us. The route lead us past the Virupaksha Temple and down by the river where you can catch a boat to Hippie Island.

Before long, we made it through the crowds and into rural territory. The hustle and bustle of the bazaar fading into peace and tranquillity. Eventually, we reached the start of the banana plantations. From here you should start hiking, but that didn’t stop us attempting to get our bicycles through.

We didn’t get far before realising the bike was a bad idea. And on our return to where we started, we bumped into a local guide. Amused by our failed attempt, the guide offered to take us to the falls for 200 INR. Between the 4 of us, that was a decent price, and so we accepted.

Our guide turned out to be quite the character and kept us thoroughly entertained with his stories as we hiked. Once we were through the plantations, the route had us scrambling over boulders and avoiding rock pools. Although some areas were slippery, there was no real danger until we reached the waterfall.

At this point, things got a little sketchy. To reach the natural pools, you must first scale the rocks through the waterfall. A wrong move could be nasty, so you will need to take extra care at this point. Thankfully, we all made it through safely, and it was plain sailing from there.

It was a relief when we finally arrived at the natural pools. After hiking in the heat, we couldn’t wait to jump into the refreshing waters. There are some pretty bold cliff jumps for those brave enough; however, we opted for the easy route on this occasion. The water is deep here, but it’s worth checking with a local before attempting any big jumps.

Once we’d cooled down, we could fully appreciate the incredible spot we had discovered. Not for the first time, we marvelled over the breath-taking landscapes that prevail in Hampi. It was tempting to stay for sunset, but we figured it wouldn’t be smart to attempt the hike back in low lighting.

In conclusion, a visit to the Secret Waterfall is perfect for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure in Hampi.

*Top Tip – Check out Sanapur Lake in Hampi for more epic cliff jumping spots.
