When you think of rainbows, it’s impossible not to think about the LGBTQ community. And as an out and proud lesbian, I’m pretty smug that we’ve asserted the rainbow as our symbol.

The history of how the rainbow became the international symbol for LGBTQ rights goes back to 1978. When Gilbert Barker, an artist and openly gay man, decided we needed a flag to represent our visibility.  

He believed the various colours of the rainbow reflect our community’s diversity and unity. And today, rainbow flags can be seen flying proudly at Pride events all around the world.
