NAHARGARH FORT JAIPUR – A RELIABLE GUIDE

Nahargarh Fort is a tourist hotspot in the magical city of Jaipur. Located high in the Aravali mountains, the breathtaking fortress provides an unrivalled view over the bustling city below. The fort is famed for being an architectural wonder, as well as being one of the best sunset spots in Jaipur.

Historically, along with Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort, Nahargarh helped form a defence wall around the old Royal City. The name ‘Nahargarh’ translates to Tiger Fort in English, so I can only assume wild tigers once roamed the same mountains. As you sit atop the walls of the old fort, it’s easy to picture the scene. After all, Jaipur was once a barren desert city. We consider Nahargarh Fort to be one of the best places to visit in Jaipur, as mentioned in our 2-day Jaipur Itinerary.

In this guide, we advise everything you need to know ahead of visiting Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur. Including entrance fees, opening times, what to expect & more.

How to get to Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur

Jaipur is an essential addition to any India itinerary. It is one of the most visited cities in the country and forms a part of the Golden Triangle Route. You can conveniently reach Jaipur via bus, train, or plane from all over the country.

Located roughly 30-40 minutes outside of the city centre, the easiest way to reach Nahargarh Fort is by taxi or tuk-tuk. Although, the tuk-tuks tend to struggle on the steep hair pinned road to the fort entrance, so taxis are the quicker option.

However you choose to travel, it pays to organise a return trip with your driver. The drivers who wait outside the fort are known to charge extortionate rates because they know your options are limited. By agreeing on a price beforehand, you will avoid any trouble on the return journey.

Alternatively, if you are feeling energetic, you can take a cobbled path up the fort. The base of the stairs can be found nearby Nahargarh Palace Hotel, and if you are reasonably fit, it’s a 30-minute hike to the top.

Our favourite way to get around Jaipur is by using the Ola Taxi app. Similar to Uber, taxis are ordered directly through the app. Not only can you book single trips, but it’s an affordable way to hire a driver for the entire day!

Things to Know Before Visiting

Here is all the information you’ll need ahead of visiting Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur.

Opening Times

The official opening times for Nahargarh Fort are the hours between 10 am and 6 pm. However, this doesn’t apply to the perimeter of the fort which is still accessible for sunrise and sunset.

Best Time to Visit Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur

The best time of year for sightseeing in Jaipur is October-February when the weather is dry but not too hot. Although, Rajasthan does border the Thar Desert, and the midday heat can be relentless all year round. With this in mind, we suggest sightseeing in Jaipur in the early morning or late afternoon.

To make the most of Nahargarh Fort, we suggest arriving an hour or so before sunset. This way, you will have time to explore the several attractions inside the fort, followed by the beautiful sunset view.

Time Required

You should allow around 3-4 hours to visit Nahargarh Fort, including travel time from the city.

Attractions inside Nahargarh Fort

Madhavendra Bhavan Palace – A historical building where members of the Royal Family once resided.

Wax Museum – A hall of wax statues of Indian icons. Basically, it’s the Indian version of Madame Tussauds! Massively overpriced though in our opinion.

Sculpture Park – Here, you will find seasonal exhibitions with collections from both Indian and International artists.

Restaurants – There are a couple of restaurants located within the fort where you can refresh and enjoy a view of the city. The budget-option is government-run Padao, while Once Upon a Time is more high-priced.

Our Experience at Nahargarh Fort

It was the night of Diwali when we ventured to Nahargarh Fort for sunset. The city was swarming with energy and excitement. Jaipur is considered to be one of the best places in India to celebrate Diwali. However, it’s also one of the busiest times to explore in the already over-populated city.

On a typical day, you can expect the fort to be generally quiet but tonight was different. People were not only here to watch the sunset, but to watch the festival of light unfold across the city.  Tourist and locals swarmed the fort, and the celebrations were having a warming effect on everybody.  We even got discounted entry at the discretion of a jolly guard.

We explored the perimeter of the fort, admiring the architecture and marvelling the view.  All of the attractions were closed by this time, but thankfully, we were only here for the sunset.  For incredible vistas of the city, there is nowhere quite like Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur.

We passed a series of buildings and a stepwell as we made our way west to the sunset point. On this side of the fort, there’s a small restaurant where you can sit and enjoy the view so long as you buy a drink. We preferred to have a little wander before finding a quiet spot of our own.

Nahargarh Fort – The Best Sunset Spot in Jaipur

It has to be said, the only advantage of the pollution in Jaipur is that it makes for an epic sunset. The sun appeared hazy and ethereal as the sky set on fire in pink and orange hues. By this time, people were clambering atop the walls of the fort to get a photo. Security guards patrol the area asking people to come down; however, it doesn’t prevent people from getting a picture at one of the most Insta-worthy locations in Jaipur. (Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram here!)

On any other day, the fort would vacate as soon as the sun disappears, but the crowds remained in anticipation for darkness. Before long, the first sign of fireworks echoed through the atmosphere. The sky burst into an expl0sion of colour as a sea of white light swept through the city below. It was the perfect start for our Diwali celebrations in Jaipur.

In conclusion, sunset at Nahargarh Fort was one of the best we experienced during our one month in India. It is, without doubt, one of the best places to visit in the city, and a worthy addition to any Jaipur Itinerary.
