How to get to Matanga Hill – The Best Sunset Spot in Hampi

Matanga Hill is located approximately 1km from the Hampi Bazaar area. It is easily accessed via foot or bicycle. You can find many other significant Hampi Ruins nearby.

While there are said to be three hiking trails to the peak, the only one we have experience of is the North trail. This trail comprises of a staircase, cleverly engineered amid the bouldered hill.

Remarkably, the stairs are still in excellent condition. By taking this route, anybody of a reasonable fitness level can reach the hilltop within 30-minutes.

Although we can’t speak from experience, the other trails sound a little more challenging. Hiking enthusiasts would do well to check them out; however, beginners are advised to stick to the safer route.

Our Experience at Matanga Hill in Hampi

Matanga Hill caught our eye as soon as we arrived into Hampi. It was noticeably one of the highest points in the fallen kingdom. And we were confident we would get a cracking view of the landscapes that had already left us in awe.

We made it our mission to attempt the climb on that very day. At this point, we had no idea if it was even accessible. But we were determined to find out. We rented some bicycles from our guesthouse and set off for the foot of the hill.

Along the way, we passed several intriguing ruin sites. Exploring Hampi has you feeling like Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider! We felt like little kids again – on a wild adventure within an ancient land.

Anyhow, it wasn’t long before we had to padlock the bikes and set off on foot. Uncertain at this point if there were any hiking trails, we scaled the foot of the hill searching for a safe spot to climb. We attempted to climb boulders and rocks, only to get so far before having to come back down.

We felt slightly defeated. Not to mention cooking in the afternoon heat. Suddenly, we noticed something moving at the top of the hill. We could just about make out the tiny figures of people walking around. So there was a way up! And so, our search continued.

Finally, we came across the North trail. A carefully engineered staircase amidst the boulders. I’m not sure how old the stairs are; however, they were in excellent condition. They almost made the 30-minute hike to the top feel easy.

The climb led us past ancient shrines, monument ruins, and eerie caves. It was an exciting hike, full of mystery. Just be sure to take plenty of water as there are no vendors along the route.

Matanga Hill is the Best Sunset Spot in Hampi

As we approached the summit of the hill, the first thing to catch our eye was the ruins of Veerabhadra Temple. There is an interesting history behind the temple and Matanga Hill, but I’ll save that for another time.

The highlight of Matanga hill is the astonishing panoramic view over the Hampi landscapes. From here, we could see the Achyutaraya Temple, Tungabhadra River, Virupaksha Temple, and the bouldered landscapes of Hippie Island. It truly is a sight to behold.

We stayed long enough to witness the sun setting over the bouldered landscapes. Sunsets in Hampi are just as bit as mystical as the ancient city itself. And as the blood-red sun transformed the sky into hazy orange hues, we knew we’d found our favourite sunset spot in Hampi.
