ABANDONED SEAPLANE IN CORON, PALAWAN

After securing a work away placement in Coron Town, we were fortunate enough to spend an entire month exploring this magical part of the Philippines.  Many know Coron for its world-class diving, island hopping and picture-perfect beaches; however, there are parts of the mainland that remain unexplored.  One of our favourite hidden gems on the island was this abandoned seaplane.

In this blog post, I will let you know how you can find the abandoned seaplane in Coron & why it is there.

OUR EXPERIENCE AT THE ABANDONED SEAPLANE IN CORON

One of our favourite things to do with our time off in Coron was to rent a scooter and head off to explore the island.  We would never go out with a plan, which was exciting because we would always discover something new; whether it be a remote beach, a picturesque road, or even a local village where we could interact with the locals. On this day, however, it was an abandoned seaplane.

When we initially spotted the plane sat amid a scenic bay, we had no idea it was abandoned. We assumed it belonged to one of the plush resorts adorning the coastline. It was only after passing it on 3 or 4 separate occasions that curiosity got the better of us, and we decided to find out more about the mysterious old plane.

We pulled over at the next resort, Puerto Del Sol, and enquired about the seaplane. We were intrigued to hear that the plane had in fact been abandoned in the bay many years ago. Although we pushed for more information in regards to how it got there, the staff didn’t seem to know too much about the history behind it. They did, however, tell us that there are rumours that the abandoned seaplane will be converted into a floating restaurant.

DID SOMEBODY SAY ADVENTURE?

With the opportunity for an adventure, we asked if there was any way to get a closer look at the abandoned seaplane. We were thrilled when they offered us the use of their only kayak. OK, maybe ‘thrilled’ is an exaggeration. After a pretty scary encounter on a kayak in Laos, we’ve been put off them ever since; however, we knew this was our opportunity to conquer our fear.

We solidly waterproofed our valuables, put on our lifejackets, and assiduously made our way towards the abandoned seaplane. Much to our relief, we made it smoothly in around 10-15 minutes. It was surreal to be up close to the rusty old plane, which felt oddly consumed by an eerie solitude. We couldn’t help but ponder on the history of the plane, and who had left it there.

After sho0ting some pictures for the ‘gram’, we decided to put our kayaking skills to the test and attempt to get inside. I’m ashamed to say we didn’t quite make it, BUT in our defence, it was a very windy day (that’s our excuse anyway). I have no doubt a confident kayaker would make it inside no problem, and if you do, please make sure to tag us in your pictures. We can’t wait to see what wimps we really are!

You will need to bring cash for the kayak rental (150PHP). Below are the essential items that we carry with us on every adventure. But to ensure you don’t leave behind any of those backpacker essentials, here is our free printable packing list.

1. REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE

It is no secret that single-use plastic is causing irreversible damage to our ecosystems, it is therefore imperative that as travellers, we try to minimise our consumption as much as possible.

We always carry a reusable water bottle and you will find that most hotels or hostels have a refill station.  Not only is it better for the planet but you’ll save cash too!
