Flores is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands in the eastern part of INDONESIA, and a strong contender to be the highlight of our travels thus far. From prodigious active volcanoes to extraordinary rugged landscapes, and candy pink beaches to deadly Komodo dragons; Flores is sure to excite the imagination of any curious traveller.

Although an element of tourism does reside in Flores, mostly in the west, it is subtle enough that visitors are guaranteed a raw & cultural experience. The islands immaturity in this sense is reflected through the challenging transportation from one place to the next, the simplicity in accommodation & the locals curiosity when meeting a BULE (Tourist)! However for us, this only added to the charm of the island. And we have no doubt that Flores will flourish in the years to come.

HOW TO GET TO FLORES

By Air – The easiest way to get to Flores is by air. You can get a direct flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo, west of the island. Or alternatively, you can take the same route as we did and fly direct from Bali to Maumere, far east of the island.

By Boat – Check out 12go.asia, for the current timetable. The more adventurous route involves 4 days, 3 nights on a live-a-board boat. This boat departs daily from Lombok and gives you the opportunity to see some of the paradise islands encompassing Flores.

FLORES ITINERARY

This 2 week Flores itinerary covers from East to West. But it is possible to travel in the opposite direction. While we spent over 2 weeks exploring the Island, it’s definitely doable in a shorter amount of time. Just pick the places that sound interesting to you and make them a priority. But do keep in mind that the roads are a nightmare and travelling from place to place can sometimes take an entire day.
